Digital Nomad Jobs for Beginners

Time to skill up so you can achieve your location independent dream. Fortunately, we are living in an exciting time where technology is enabling us to learn and work from anywhere. In this post, I will describe how I up-skilled mostly online and the what options you have.

During my time rideshare driving, I decided to pursue copywriting. I’d always loved writing, and with my background in sales, I decided to marry the two together; Sales + writing = copywriting…. More or less. It was one of the best decisions I’ve made.

I attended only one class on-premises at the Association for Data-driven Marketing and Advertising (AADA) and an online class called Copywriting Essentials at the Australian Writers Centre and wallah, I was a copywriter! Well, at least that’s what I told people.

Learn, then earn

We are living in an amazingly lucky time where tools and technology that costs thousands and were out of reach for most are now easily accessible. That means just about anyone can learn the skills required to work from anywhere.

This new avenue for learning from experts online is cheaper, and more actionable than traditional education. A few worth checking out are:

Of course, not all skills are suited for everyone, which is why I’ve compiled a list of the best digital nomad jobs for beginners.

Digital nomad jobs 2021

Freelance writer

A freelance writer can come on many forms, some of which include:

Copywriter: Writes for sales or marketing content, i.e., Ads, website content, sales letters, marketing emails, landing pages, press releases, etc.
• Content writer: Writes for content marketing purposes such as articles, blog posts and white papers.
• Ghostwriter: Writes a publication on behalf of the client without taking credit as the author.

Most freelance writers can do their work remotely, enabling them to travel freely and choose where they live, as long as they hit deadline!

Search Engine Advertising (SEA)

Managing Google Ads and Bing Ads is a complex task to perform successfully. Luckily for you, Google offers free courses that will get you certified – which helps if you want to manage campaigns for other businesses. It will take some time, effort, and dedication, but if you can get Google or Bing Ads certified, not only will it look great on your LinkedIn, but you should have no problem finding clients of your own.

Search Engine Optimization (SEO)

The listings that come up on the Google search results page (SERP) with the little ad box next to them (SEA) are due to good SEO practice. As such, SEO requires getting your clients’ websites ranked highly for search queries. There are two sides to SEO; on-page SEO which largely involves SEO copywriting and keyword research. And then there’s more technical side. If you can master both, SEO is a perfect business you can do from anywhere.

Social Media Marketing

Are you very active on social media? If so, this could be the choice for you. Social media is now a powerful marketing tool that many businesses either do not have the time or knowledge to leverage successfully. And the skill can be largely self-taught, especially if you love social media. Content calendars are key here as successful social media marketing is all about consistency. Of course, being a completely digital medium, you can manage social media marketing from anywhere.

Trader

Technology has enabled us to trade just about anything from your mobile phone, including shares, ETF’s, options, currency and even crypto. It will require some capital and if you want to take it seriously, you’ll probably want some larger screens than just your phone to keep an eye on all those charts. One of the riskier location independent jobs but if you can master a bulletproof system, it can be the perfect digital nomad job.

Data Labeling

This job refers to a specific company; Appen, an artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning (ML) enabled platform that provides data sets to the likes of Google and Facebook, amongst other tech behemoths. It leverages human intelligence; pool of freelancers from around the world to aid technology innovation by correctly labelling data sets. Almost anyone can learn to do this if they are committed. And if you are multilingual, then even better. The pay is not great but contracting for Appen provides a steady source of income which you can earn from anywhere.

Cloud Specialist

Okay, so this one’s a bit more high-tech skill set, but one that is becoming increasingly more in demand as businesses move to the cloud. And that is exactly what a cloud computing specialist does; helps companies migrate their data and services into the cloud. If you are tech talented and can help with the digital transformation of businesses, then the world is your oyster. And guess what, you can do it all remotely.

Programmer

Another one that requires some serious technical expertise. In short, you need to learn how to code, which is arguably one of the best skills you can learn to future proof your career in this day in age. Once you have a few programming languages under your belt and landed some clients, you will have one of the best location independent jobs to work from anywhere because, like cloud specialists, you’ll be paid very well for your skill set which will easily fund your location independent lifestyle.

Graphic designer

Graphic design is a crowded market, but if you can establish a niche and excell at it, it can be an ideal digital nomad job. If you are creatively minded, enjoyed art class at school, then this could be the job for you. Graphic design can be done from anywhere provided you have a computer and internet connection. Just about all the outsourcing sites such as Fiverr have graphic desingers on their books, which can be a good place to start. But if you can work towards finding your own clients you will be able to charge much more for your services.

Get learning to start living

Of course, there are many other location independent jobs pathways to take, but if I were to list them all, then this post would turn into a novel. However, above are what I believe to be the best options, not only for working remotely but also as valuable skill-sets to future proof your career in the digital age.
